Our Focus Areas
I. Health Research
At the Center for Health Research and Innovation (CHeRi), our research approach is comprehensive and multifaceted, encompassing both quantitative and qualitative methods. We utilize a wide array of study designs, including observational, interventional, and implementation science methodologies, to ensure generation of robust and impactful findings. See below an outline of our methodological approaches:
II. Innovation
CHeRi harnesses the diverse expertise within the university to develop technological solutions addressing various health challenges in the Kenyan population. At the center, we host a multidisciplinary health informatics technical working group collaborating with the Ministry of Health and county governments on the ongoing national initiative to digitize health services. Investigators at CHeRi, in collaboration with colleagues at DeKUT’s Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, support the Ministry of Health in analyzing data from electronic health information systems to facilitate evidence-based healthcare delivery. Additionally, in collaboration with colleagues at the university’s Institute of Geomatics, GIS, and Remote Sensing, the CHeRi team is planning a project to map the geographic distribution of various diseases across the country.
III. Community Outreach and Linkages
We have established a robust community engagement framework that ensures participatory involvement of neighboring communities in ongoing health projects. By working closely with County health departments, we ensure that ongoing projects are seamlessly integrated within the existing healthcare system, preventing duplication of activities and ensuring the sustainability of interventions.
IV. Project Design, Implementation, and Monitoring and Evaluation
CHeRi has the expertise to design and implement projects that address healthcare needs across primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention levels. Our capabilities also extend to conducting comprehensive monitoring and evaluation of health projects to ensure their effectiveness and sustainability.
V. Capacity Building
We are in the process of developing short courses aimed at enhancing the capacities of health workers to conduct applied research. These courses are designed to address locally relevant health issues, ensuring that health workers are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to improve health outcomes in their communities.
